י וַיְדַבֵּר יְדוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃
25:10 Vaydaber Adonai el Moshe lemor
יא פִּינְחָס בֶּן אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֵן הֵשִׁיב אֶת חֲמָתִי מֵעַל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּקַנְאוֹ אֶת קִנְאָתִי בְּתוֹכָם וְלֹא כִלִּיתִי אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּקִנְאָתִי׃
11 Pinchas ben El'azar ben Aharon hakohen heshiv et chamati me'al bnei Yisrael bekan'o et kin'ati betocham velo chiliti et bnei Yisrael bekin'ati
יב לָכֵן אֱמֹר הִנְנִי נֹתֵן לוֹ אֶת בְּרִיתִי שָׁלוֹם׃
12 Lachen emor hineni noten lo et briti shalom
יג וְהָיְתָה לּוֹ וּלְזַרְעוֹ אַחֲרָיו בְּרִית כְּהֻנַּת עוֹלָם תַּחַת אֲשֶׁר קִנֵּא לֵאלֹהָיו וַיְכַפֵּר עַל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
13 Vehaytah lo ulezar'o acharav brit kehunat olam tachat asher kine leElohav vaychaper al bnei Yisrael
יד וְשֵׁם אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל הַמֻּכֶּה אֲשֶׁר הֻכָּה אֶת הַמִּדְיָנִית זִמְרִי בֶּן סָלוּא נְשִׂיא בֵית אָב לַשִּׁמְעֹנִי׃
14 Veshem ish Yisrael hamukeh asher hukah et haMidyanit Zimri ben Salu nesi veit av laShim'oni
טו וְשֵׁם הָאִשָּׁה הַמֻּכָּה הַמִּדְיָנִית כָּזְבִּי בַת צוּר רֹאשׁ אֻמּוֹת בֵּית אָב בְּמִדְיָן הוּא׃
15 Veshem ha'ishah hamukah haMidyanit Kozbi vat Tzur rosh umot beit av beMidyan hu
טז וַיְדַבֵּר יְדוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃

יז צָרוֹר אֶת הַמִּדְיָנִים וְהִכִּיתֶם אוֹתָם׃
17 Tzaror et haMidyanim vehikitem otam
יח כִּי צֹרְרִים הֵם לָכֶם בְּנִכְלֵיהֶם אֲשֶׁר נִכְּלוּ לָכֶם עַל דְּבַר פְּעוֹר וְעַל דְּבַר כָּזְבִּי בַת נְשִׂיא מִדְיָן אֲחֹתָם הַמֻּכָּה בְיוֹם הַמַּגֵּפָה עַל דְּבַר פְּעוֹר׃
18 Ki tzorerim hem lachem benichleihem asher niklu lachem al devar Pe'or ve'al devar Kozbi vat nesi Midyan achotam hamukah veyom hamagefah al devar Pe'or
יט וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי הַמַּגֵּפָה {פ} כו א וַיֹּאמֶר יְדוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה וְאֶל אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֵן לֵאמֹר׃
19 Vayhi acharei hamagefah
ב שְׂאוּ אֶת רֹאשׁ כָּל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם כָּל יֹצֵא צָבָא בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃

ג וַיְדַבֵּר מֹשֶׁה וְאֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן אֹתָם בְּעַרְבֹת מוֹאָב עַל יַרְדֵּן יְרֵחוֹ לֵאמֹר׃
2 Se'u et rosh kol adat bnei Yisrael miben esrim shanah vamalah leveit avotam kol yotze tzava beYisrael
ד מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמָעְלָה כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְדוָד אֶת מֹשֶׁה וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הַיֹּצְאִים מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם׃
3 Vaydaber Moshe ve'El'azar hakohen otam be'arvot Moav al Yarden Yerecho lemor
ה רְאוּבֵן בְּכוֹר יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן חֲנוֹךְ מִשְׁפַּחַת הַחֲנֹכִי לְפַלּוּא מִשְׁפַּחַת הַפַּלֻּאִי׃
4 Miben esrim shanah vamalah ka'asher tzivah Adonai et Moshe uvnei Yisrael hayotz'im me'eretz Mitzrayim
ו לְחֶצְרֹן מִשְׁפַּחַת הַחֶצְרוֹנִי לְכַרְמִי מִשְׁפַּחַת הַכַּרְמִי׃
5 Re'uven bechor Yisrael bnei Re'uven Chanoch mishpachat haChanochi leFalu mishpachat haPalu'i
ז אֵלֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹת הָרֻאוּבֵנִי וַיִּהְיוּ פְקֻדֵיהֶם שְׁלֹשָׁה וְאַרְבָּעִים אֶלֶף וּשְׁבַע מֵאוֹת וּשְׁלֹשִׁים׃
6 LeChetzron mishpachat haChetzroni leCharmi mishpachat haKarmi
ח וּבְנֵי פַלּוּא אֱלִיאָב׃
7 Eleh mishpechot haRe'uveni vayihyu fekudeihem shloshah ve'arba'im elef ushva me'ot ushloshim
ט וּבְנֵי אֱלִיאָב נְמוּאֵל וְדָתָן וַאֲבִירָם הוּא דָתָן וַאֲבִירָם (קרואי) [קְרִיאֵי] הָעֵדָה אֲשֶׁר הִצּוּ עַל מֹשֶׁה וְעַל אַהֲרֹן בַּעֲדַת קֹרַח בְּהַצֹּתָם עַל יְדוָד׃
8 Uvnei Falu Eliav
י וַתִּפְתַּח הָאָרֶץ אֶת פִּיהָ וַתִּבְלַע אֹתָם וְאֶת קֹרַח בְּמוֹת הָעֵדָה בַּאֲכֹל הָאֵשׁ אֵת חֲמִשִּׁים וּמָאתַיִם אִישׁ וַיִּהְיוּ לְנֵס׃
9 Uvnei Eliav Nemu'el veDatan va'Aviram hu Datan va'Aviram kri'ei ha'edah asher hitzu al Moshe ve'al Aharon ba'adat Korach behatzotam al Adonai
יא וּבְנֵי קֹרַח לֹא מֵתוּ׃
10 Vatiftach ha'aretz et piha vativla otam ve'et Korach bemot ha'edah ba'achol ha'esh et chamishim umatayim ish vayihyu lenes
יב בְּנֵי שִׁמְעוֹן לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לִנְמוּאֵל מִשְׁפַּחַת הַנְּמוּאֵלִי לְיָמִין מִשְׁפַּחַת הַיָּמִינִי לְיָכִין מִשְׁפַּחַת הַיָּכִינִי׃
11 Uvnei Korach lo metu
יג לְזֶרַח מִשְׁפַּחַת הַזַּרְחִי לְשָׁאוּל מִשְׁפַּחַת הַשָּׁאוּלִי׃
12 Bnei Shim'on lemishpechotam liNmu'el mishpachat haNemu'eli leYamin mishpachat haYamini leYachin mishpachat haYachini
יד אֵלֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹת הַשִּׁמְעֹנִי שְׁנַיִם וְעֶשְׂרִים אֶלֶף וּמָאתָיִם׃
13 LeZerach mishpachat haZarchi leSha'ul mishpachat haSha'uli
טו בְּנֵי גָד לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לִצְפוֹן מִשְׁפַּחַת הַצְּפוֹנִי לְחַגִּי מִשְׁפַּחַת הַחַגִּי לְשׁוּנִי מִשְׁפַּחַת הַשּׁוּנִי׃
14 Eleh mishpechot haShim'oni shnayim ve'esrim elef umatayim
טז לְאָזְנִי מִשְׁפַּחַת הָאָזְנִי לְעֵרִי מִשְׁפַּחַת הָעֵרִי׃
15 Bnei Gad lemishpechotam liTzfon mishpachat haTzefoni leChagi mishpachat haChagi leShuni mishpachat haShuni
יז לַאֲרוֹד מִשְׁפַּחַת הָאֲרוֹדִי לְאַרְאֵלִי מִשְׁפַּחַת הָאַרְאֵלִי׃
16 Le'Ozni mishpachat ha'Ozni le'Eri mishpachat ha'Eri
יח אֵלֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹת בְּנֵי גָד לִפְקֻדֵיהֶם אַרְבָּעִים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת׃
17 La'Arod mishpachat ha'Arodi le'Ar'eli mishpachat ha'Ar'eli
יט בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה עֵר וְאוֹנָן וַיָּמָת עֵר וְאוֹנָן בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן׃
18 Eleh mishpechot bnei Gad lifkudeihem arba'im elef vachamesh me'ot
כ וַיִּהְיוּ בְנֵי יְהוּדָה לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְשֵׁלָה מִשְׁפַּחַת הַשֵּׁלָנִי לְפֶרֶץ מִשְׁפַּחַת הַפַּרְצִי לְזֶרַח מִשְׁפַּחַת הַזַּרְחִי׃
19 Bnei Yehudah Er ve'Onan vayamat Er ve'Onan be'eretz Kena'an
כא וַיִּהְיוּ בְנֵי פֶרֶץ לְחֶצְרֹן מִשְׁפַּחַת הַחֶצְרֹנִי לְחָמוּל מִשְׁפַּחַת הֶחָמוּלִי׃
20 Vayihyu vnei Yehudah lemishpechotam leShelah mishpachat haShelani leFeretz mishpachat haPartzi leZerach mishpachat haZarchi
כב אֵלֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹת יְהוּדָה לִפְקֻדֵיהֶם שִׁשָּׁה וְשִׁבְעִים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת׃
21 Vayihyu vnei Feretz leChetzron mishpachat haChetzroni leChamul mishpachat heChamuli
כג בְּנֵי יִשָּׂשכָר לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם תּוֹלָע מִשְׁפַּחַת הַתּוֹלָעִי לְפֻוָה מִשְׁפַּחַת הַפּוּנִי׃
22 Eleh mishpechot Yehudah lifkudeihem shishah veshiv'im elef vachamesh me'ot
כד לְיָשׁוּב מִשְׁפַּחַת הַיָּשׁוּבִי לְשִׁמְרֹן מִשְׁפַּחַת הַשִּׁמְרֹנִי׃
23 Bnei Yissachar lemishpechotam Tola mishpachat haTola'i leFuvah mishpachat haPuni
כה אֵלֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹת יִשָּׂשכָר לִפְקֻדֵיהֶם אַרְבָּעָה וְשִׁשִּׁים אֶלֶף וּשְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת׃
24 LeYashuv mishpachat haYashuvi leShimron mishpachat haShimroni
כו בְּנֵי זְבוּלֻן לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְסֶרֶד מִשְׁפַּחַת הַסַּרְדִּי לְאֵלוֹן מִשְׁפַּחַת הָאֵלֹנִי לְיַחְלְאֵל מִשְׁפַּחַת הַיַּחְלְאֵלִי׃
25 Eleh mishpechot Yissachar lifkudeihem arba'ah veshishim elef ushlosh me'ot
כז אֵלֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹת הַזְּבוּלֹנִי לִפְקֻדֵיהֶם שִׁשִּׁים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת׃
26 Bnei Zevulun lemishpechotam leSered mishpachat haSardi le'Elon mishpachat ha'Eloni leYachle'el mishpachat haYachle'eli
כח בְּנֵי יוֹסֵף לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם מְנַשֶּׁה וְאֶפְרָיִם׃
27 Eleh mishpechot haZevuloni lifkudeihem shishim elef vachamesh me'ot
כט בְּנֵי מְנַשֶּׁה לְמָכִיר מִשְׁפַּחַת הַמָּכִירִי וּמָכִיר הוֹלִיד אֶת גִּלְעָד לְגִלְעָד מִשְׁפַּחַת הַגִּלְעָדִי׃
28 Bnei Yosef lemishpechotam Menasheh ve'Efrayim
ל אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי גִלְעָד אִיעֶזֶר מִשְׁפַּחַת הָאִיעֶזְרִי לְחֵלֶק מִשְׁפַּחַת הַחֶלְקִי׃

לא וְאַשְׂרִיאֵל מִשְׁפַּחַת הָאַשְׂרִאֵלִי וְשֶׁכֶם מִשְׁפַּחַת הַשִּׁכְמִי׃

לב וּשְׁמִידָע מִשְׁפַּחַת הַשְּׁמִידָעִי וְחֵפֶר מִשְׁפַּחַת הַחֶפְרִי׃

לג וּצְלָפְחָד בֶּן חֵפֶר לֹא הָיוּ לוֹ בָּנִים כִּי אִם בָּנוֹת וְשֵׁם בְּנוֹת צְלָפְחָד מַחְלָה וְנֹעָה חָגְלָה מִלְכָּה וְתִרְצָה׃
32 UShmida mishpachat haShmida'i veChefer mishpachat haChefri
לד אֵלֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹת מְנַשֶּׁה וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם שְׁנַיִם וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וּשְׁבַע מֵאוֹת׃
33 UTzelofchad ben Chefer lo hayu lo banim ki im banot veshem bnot Tzelofchad Machlah veNo'ah Choglah Milkah veTirtzah
לה אֵלֶּה בְנֵי אֶפְרַיִם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְשׁוּתֶלַח מִשְׁפַּחַת הַשֻּׁתַלְחִי לְבֶכֶר מִשְׁפַּחַת הַבַּכְרִי לְתַחַן מִשְׁפַּחַת הַתַּחֲנִי׃
34 Eleh mishpechot Menasheh ufkudeihem shnayim vachamishim elef ushva me'ot
לו וְאֵלֶּה בְּנֵי שׁוּתָלַח לְעֵרָן מִשְׁפַּחַת הָעֵרָנִי׃
35 Eleh vnei Efrayim lemishpechotam leShutelach mishpachat haShutalchi leVecher mishpachat haBachri leTachan mishpachat haTachani
לז אֵלֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹת בְּנֵי אֶפְרַיִם לִפְקֻדֵיהֶם שְׁנַיִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת אֵלֶּה בְנֵי יוֹסֵף לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם׃
36 Ve'eleh bnei Shutalach le'Eran mishpachat ha'Erani
לח בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֶלַע מִשְׁפַּחַת הַבַּלְעִי לְאַשְׁבֵּל מִשְׁפַּחַת הָאַשְׁבֵּלִי לַאֲחִירָם מִשְׁפַּחַת הָאֲחִירָמִי׃

לט לִשְׁפוּפָם מִשְׁפַּחַת הַשּׁוּפָמִי לְחוּפָם מִשְׁפַּחַת הַחוּפָמִי׃

מ וַיִּהְיוּ בְנֵי בֶלַע אַרְדְּ וְנַעֲמָן מִשְׁפַּחַת הָאַרְדִּי לְנַעֲמָן מִשְׁפַּחַת הַנַּעֲמִי׃

נג לָאֵלֶּה תֵּחָלֵק הָאָרֶץ בְּנַחֲלָה בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמוֹת׃

נד לָרַב תַּרְבֶּה נַחֲלָתוֹ וְלַמְעַט תַּמְעִיט נַחֲלָתוֹ אִישׁ לְפִי פְקֻדָיו יֻתַּן נַחֲלָתוֹ׃

נה אַךְ בְּגוֹרָל יֵחָלֵק אֶת הָאָרֶץ לִשְׁמוֹת מַטּוֹת אֲבֹתָם יִנְחָלוּ׃
54 Larav tarbeh nachalato velam'at tam'it nachalato ish lefi fekudav yutan nachalato
נו עַל פִּי הַגּוֹרָל תֵּחָלֵק נַחֲלָתוֹ בֵּין רַב לִמְעָט׃
55 Ach begoral yechalek et ha'aretz lishmot matot avotam yinchalu
נז וְאֵלֶּה פְקוּדֵי הַלֵּוִי לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְגֵרְשׁוֹן מִשְׁפַּחַת הַגֵּרְשֻׁנִּי לִקְהָת מִשְׁפַּחַת הַקְּהָתִי לִמְרָרִי מִשְׁפַּחַת הַמְּרָרִי׃
56 Al pi hagoral techalek nachalato bein rav lim'at
נח אֵלֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹת לֵוִי מִשְׁפַּחַת הַלִּבְנִי מִשְׁפַּחַת הַחֶבְרֹנִי מִשְׁפַּחַת הַמַּחְלִי מִשְׁפַּחַת הַמּוּשִׁי מִשְׁפַּחַת הַקָּרְחִי וּקְהָת הוֹלִד אֶת עַמְרָם׃

נט וְשֵׁם אֵשֶׁת עַמְרָם יוֹכֶבֶד בַּת לֵוִי אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה אֹתָהּ לְלֵוִי בְּמִצְרָיִם וַתֵּלֶד לְעַמְרָם אֶת אַהֲרֹן וְאֶת מֹשֶׁה וְאֵת מִרְיָם אֲחֹתָם׃

ס וַיִּוָּלֵד לְאַהֲרֹן אֶת נָדָב וְאֶת אֲבִיהוּא אֶת אֶלְעָזָר וְאֶת אִיתָמָר׃
59 Veshem eshet Amram Yocheved bat Levi asher yaldah otah leLevi beMitzrayim vateled le'Amram et Aharon ve'et Moshe ve'et Miryam achotam

סב וַיִּהְיוּ פְקֻדֵיהֶם שְׁלֹשָׁה וְעֶשְׂרִים אֶלֶף כָּל זָכָר מִבֶּן חֹדֶשׁ וָמָעְלָה כִּי לֹא הָתְפָּקְדוּ בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל כִּי לֹא נִתַּן לָהֶם נַחֲלָה בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

סג אֵלֶּה פְּקוּדֵי מֹשֶׁה וְאֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן אֲשֶׁר פָּקְדוּ אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּעַרְבֹת מוֹאָב עַל יַרְדֵּן יְרֵחוֹ׃

סד וּבְאֵלֶּה לֹא הָיָה אִישׁ מִפְּקוּדֵי מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֵן אֲשֶׁר פָּקְדוּ אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּמִדְבַּר סִינָי׃

סה כִּי אָמַר יְדוָד לָהֶם מוֹת יָמֻתוּ בַּמִּדְבָּר וְלֹא נוֹתַר מֵהֶם אִישׁ כִּי אִם כָּלֵב בֶּן יְפֻנֶּה וִיהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן נוּן׃

יא וְאִם אֵין אַחִים לְאָבִיו וּנְתַתֶּם אֶת נַחֲלָתוֹ לִשְׁאֵרוֹ הַקָּרֹב אֵלָיו מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתּוֹ וְיָרַשׁ אֹתָהּ וְהָיְתָה לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְחֻקַּת מִשְׁפָּט כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְדוָד אֶת מֹשֶׁה׃

Parashat Pinchas opens at a charged moment: after the storm of sin and plague, it is Pinchas, one man who rises from within the camp, who manages to stop the collapse of an entire nation. For his deed he receives a rare covenant - “Hineni noten lo et briti shalom” - behold, I give him My covenant of peace (Numbers 25:12). It is astonishing: an act of true zeal, when it is clean of ego and flows from pain over the desecration of the holy, gives birth precisely to peace.
From there the parashah moves to a new counting of the people of Israel. Not just a census, but a moment of generational transition. The generation of the desert is fading away, and the generation that will enter the Land stands at the borderline. Every family is counted, every tribe receives its place, as if the very order of the parashah carries this message: before entering the Land, you must know who you are, where you come from, and to which mission you belong.
And then comes one of the most powerful moments in the Torah: the daughters of Tzelofchad. Five women stand before Moshe and the leaders, not with a cry of rebellion, but with a clean claim of justice. They ask that their father’s name not be erased from his inheritance. And the response from Heaven confirms their words. This is not only a passage about inheritance - it is a story about spiritual courage, about people who refuse to disappear from the story of Israel.
Later, Moshe receives the news that he will not enter the Land, and instead of dwelling on himself he asks for a new leader for the people. This is perhaps one of the greatest moments in leadership: when a person knows he will not see the continuation, yet makes sure the people will continue. Yehoshua is chosen, and Moshe passes to him from his splendor - not only authority, but a soul of mission.
At the end of the parashah appears the list of the daily and festival offerings. After all the dramas - zealotry, census, inheritance, leadership - the Torah returns us to the steady rhythm: day by day, Shabbat, the new month, the festivals. As if to teach that the great moments of life matter, but true holiness is built also, and mainly, from steady repetition, from daily faithfulness, and from the ability to bring light into routine as well.
Pinchas teaches that one person can stop the fall of an entire community. The daughters of Tzelofchad teach that a small voice, if it is true, can change the order of inheritance for generations. Moshe teaches that a real leader does not ask who will remember me, but who will care for the people after me. And the offerings teach that great spiritual peaks must become stable routine, otherwise they remain only a flash.
Parashat Pinchas is a parashah of transition - from plague to healing, from desert to Land, from leader to leader, from silence to a brave feminine voice, and from a one-time eruption of zeal to steady, daily service of God.
In the middle of the census the Torah stops: the sons of Korach did not die
“Uvnei Korach lo metu” - and the sons of Korach did not die (Numbers 26:11).
And this is astonishing, because this verse appears precisely inside the census. The Torah counts families, tribes, numbers, names - and suddenly, in the middle of the counting, it stops and tells us: wait, do not close Korach’s story too quickly. True, Korach was swallowed up. True, his dispute became a symbol of disaster. But his children? They did not die.
Sometimes a person is born into a family story, a social story, or a spiritual story that seems already sealed. Everyone says: he is the son of… that is the family of… from there no one gets out. The idea that rises from the verses is: not true - even if a person is born into a broken story, he does not have to be swallowed by it.
And this connects wondrously to the daughters of Tzelofchad. They too stand before the danger of disappearing. The Torah relates that Tzelofchad had no sons, only daughters, and their names were Machlah, No’ah, Choglah, Milkah, and Tirtzah. Afterward they stand before Moshe and ask why their father’s name should be diminished, and God says to Moshe: “Ken bnot Tzelofchad dovrot” - the daughters of Tzelofchad speak rightly (Numbers 27:7).
The sons of Korach teach that one can be saved from the past.
The daughters of Tzelofchad teach that one can build a future even when it seems there is no continuation.
Parashat Pinchas is not only a parashah about zeal, leadership, and inheritance. It is a parashah about people who were supposed to be erased from the story - but the Torah stops everything in order to say: they remain.
And this may be the hidden thread of the parashah. It begins already at the end of Parashat Balak, when Pinchas rises - “Vayakom mitoch ha’edah” - he rose from the midst of the congregation (Numbers 25:7). The daughters of Tzelofchad stand - “Vata’amodnah lifnei Moshe” - they stood before Moshe (27:2). Yehoshua is stood before the people - “Vaya’amidehu lifnei El’azar hakohen” - he stood him before El’azar the priest (27:22). Against everything that threatens to erase - plague, desert, a name about to be lost - the parashah has one answer: to rise and to stand.
The earth opened its mouth and swallowed Korach. But the one who rises - the story does not swallow him.
