Parashat Pinchas - Second Aliyah

After the story of Pinchas’s zeal, the Torah opens with a complete account of a new census of all the tribes of Israel. What is the connection? And why now?

The people stood on the threshold of entering the Land. The generation of the wilderness was gone, and now it was necessary to identify who the next generation is, who remained, who the leaders are, what the roots are. So the Torah opens a new census, not as a military technicality, but as a national reckoning of the soul.

And suddenly, within the seemingly dry lists, a great drama is revealed:

“Uvnei Eliav Nemuel veDatan vaAviram… Vatiftach ha’aretz et piha vativla otam” (And the sons of Eliav: Nemuel, Datan and Aviram… and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, Numbers 26:9-10)

The Torah reminds us of the story of Korach, the stormy opposition to Moshe’s leadership, the challenge to the very roots. But this is not brought as “historical gossip,” rather to teach: even within a lineage that contains wickedness, holiness and hope can grow. The Torah emphasizes: “Uvnei Korach lo metu” (But the sons of Korach did not die, verse 11).

Rashi on this verse brings the words of the Talmud (Sanhedrin 110a): they were part of the plot at first, but at the time of the dispute “they stirred thoughts of repentance in their hearts.” And in the book of Psalms, psalms bearing their name were preserved, “of the sons of Korach,” among them the famous line: “Ke’ayal ta’arog al afikei mayim” (As a deer longs for streams of water, Psalms 42:2).

And so, within names, numbers, and families, there are also threads of repentance. Hints of roots that turn around. This is the new generation, born not only in body but also in soul.

Further on, familiar names appear as well, like the daughters of Tzlofchad (Numbers 26:33), who will be remembered later in the parashah as those who dared to break conventions and request an inheritance in the Land. A move of repair, of a true desire to connect to the national destiny.

In other words, this aliyah speaks about the past in order to illuminate the future. About grave sins that are kept in memory, not to accuse, but to teach. And about true repentance, which gives birth to generations of creativity.

And what about us? There is within us a “Datan and Aviram,” voices of rebellion, fear, cynicism. And there is also within us “sons of Korach,” voices that can turn around, change, awaken. The moment we recognize the weakness, we can begin to grow. Precisely at the moment that seems lost, the great poets of the Temple are born.

Even within a lineage that has fallen there is a movement of repentance. Even from the abyss, song grows. Even from a broken line, a new path begins.
